Traveling for sporting events is not only a beneficial team event, but also a great learning experience. HIS supports trips ‘off island’ to play in tournaments. Funding comes from three sources following this equation: Parents 50%, HIS 25%, student Fundraising, 25%. Students who join an HIS varsity sports team will be expected to help raise funds for travel, and parents are asked to pay 50% of travel costs for the trip.
Basketball
The 2010-2011 HIS Basketball season, including the Snow Festival Classic, is currently being scheduled. More information will be posted soon.
Soccer
Last year the Hokkaido International School soccer team played against local junior and senior high school teams in September and October. Junior high boys and senior high boys and girls made up the team. We truly played in all kinds of conditions, had some flashes of brilliance, and enjoyed being a team. We were represented by students from Japan, Thailand, Russia, South Korea, Zambia and the United States.
Congratulations to the team for a great season! We're looking forward to the upcoming soccer season and matches are currently being scheduled.
Volleyball
At HIS, we have a strong Varsity Girls Volleyball Team. The team is mainly comprised of high school students therefore we offer an experience which prepares student athletes for more competitive situations while striving for excellence. We train as a squad with many members, training up younger players for future years. We practice four times per week and compete against local high school teams throughout the season. Therefore, athletes are expected to be committed, show personal responsibility, uphold good sportsmanship values and be positive role models to their peers and younger student athletes.
The highlight of the Volleyball season is playing at the International Schools’ Tournament in Nagoya. This tournament is for smaller International Schools within Japan. This year we had an excellent experience at the tournament and managed to bring home the Trophy for runners-up. We finish the season with the Northern Star Tournament. This is a local tournament where we invite teams to our school to compete, this tournament involves competitive games with an emphasis on fun and creating friendships.
Intramurals
Intramural Sports brings together the widest range of students from the secondary and involves them in a variety of large-group sports activities to complete the end of the sports program for the year. Students are placed in multi-age house teams and meet after school to play in tournament-style competitions. Intramural Sports are sponsored and organized by the Student Council and are actively participated in.
