February 12, 2012 Edition Greetings from the Dorm, We finished 2011 with a wonderful Winter Festival filled with great performances and delicious foods. Our dorm students either acted, sang, cooked or all of the above in preparation for a great new year. The evening was a culminating event involving performances from Drama and our choir. The art and history classes created pieces that showed connections to winter. The elementary classes performed crowd pleasing songs. It was great to see our dorm students and our own children performing for all. We then consumed tasty potluck dishes prepared by students and their families. There was definitely something for everyone! There were also exciting basketball games to watch. Our girls team and junior high teams competed in away tournaments in Nagoya and Kobe. This provided great opportunities to both compete athletically and interact socially. Congrats to the wins had by our Huskies! And the infamous Hokkaido snow started fall so the ski resorts are open. We've already done a couple of school and dorm trips to play in the snow. Our son was able to take ski school over break and is now excited for weekend night skiing with his big dorm brothers and sisters. Hokkaido has the lightest and most plentiful snow we've ever experienced. It is truly amazing to see how this city handles the snow and how many ski resorts beckon those who ski or snowboard. This week the Sapporo Snow Festival opens with over 122 ice/snow sculptures, it seems like a great way to celebrate the snow and make use of the huge piles of it. We then went our separate ways for winter vacation. Our family spent time to exploring more of Hokkaido. We took the train to Hakodate and enjoyed delicious seafood and learned about the rich history of Hokkaido's coast. Click Our Slide Show to see more pictures of the third largest city in Hokkaido. We are continually amazed by the natural beauty of Hokkaido. January's return meant preparation for the end of the semester. We also welcomed Adnan to our dorm family (a.k.a. one of the Santas in the photo). He is not new to HIS, only the dorm, so it was a relatively easy shift to life in Sapporo. He joins other members of Student Council who are also dorm residents. We are excited to have him as part of the dorm family. The end of the semester also meant people left the dorm. Kazuya finished his HIS diploma requirements at the end of Fall Semester. We wish him luck as he goes on to the next level.
I hope this finds you well wherever you may be in the world. Sincerely, |
