Hokkaido International School Introduction

Hokkaido International School is a private, coeducational day/boarding school that offers a Western-style education from pre-school through high school for students of all nationalities. English is the language of instruction.

School enrollment ranges between 170 ~ 200 students, with 100 ~ 120 students in the secondary school and 14 in the current graduating class of 2019. Students represent 30 different nationalities; approximately 24% are native speakers of English. Students at HIS come from bicultural families, locally-based professional families, or are Japanese returnees (from abroad) or the children of expatriate diplomats, business persons or university faculty. The dormitories provides a home for up to 40 students whose families may be involved in the oil industry (East Russia) or who are seeking an international learning experience at an English-medium school.

Hokkaido International School was founded in 1958 and is the only accredited international school on the island of Hokkaido.

Hokkaido International School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is a member of the Japan Council of International Schools (JCIS) and the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS). HIS is an International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and an International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC) school.
