Goals and desires have pushed human civilization to become what it is today. Whether it be the pyramids, the plane, or the iPhone, their creation stemmed from a desire. Desires have pushed us through struggles no other species can fathom. Even through storytelling, we see characters like Harry Potter, Sarah Connor, and Frodo Baggins complete almost impossible tasks that no one else in their time can believe. But do you know why they did it? Because they had a goal at the end of their story, and by beating Voldemort, Terminator, and Saruman, they reached that goal.

“Yeouya,” Jiwoo Kim’s 2024 short story, revolves around a famous author facing writer's block because of his memories of his ex.

Firstly, Jiwoo Kim uses desire to push her character through struggles to finish his story. Jinyoung was in the middle of making his newest story, a different story from what he would normally make. Unfortunately, he can't further his story. Memories of his past relationship with a girl named Yuna in college flood his mind as he can't focus on his story. Unbeknownst to himself, he had another desire: to know if Yuna was okay. As these memories of his past control him, he loses himself in constant questioning of his past. However, his desire to know what he did wrong pushes him to escape from his cage and ask her one simple question:

“Yuna, are you happy?”

Secondly, Jiwoo Kim uses a strong moral argument to stop readers in their tracks and force them to question themselves. Moral argument shows readers the difficult choices characters are real people have to make in their lives, and how it affects them. This gives storytelling meaning and a lesson to learn. Not being able to move on from the past stops us from becoming better people. Always asking if “I should have done this, or I could have done that” is not healthy. However, some emotions override this problem, like love, anger, and confusion, keeping people like Jinyoung unable to move forward. "Yeouya" taught me, and hopefully you, that staying in the past is holding you back, and it is never the wrong time to move on.

Thirdly, Jiwoo Kim uses weakness and need to strengthen the bond between Jinyoung and the reader. Weakness and need are necessary to keep a story compelling. It creates a sort of relatability between the main character and the reader. Without weakness and need, the reader cannot find a connection with the main character. Jinyoung’s weakness is his constant memories of his past. Through flashbacks of Yuna and him, their fights, and their affection, we see that he cannot move on from the most prized time in his life. All he needs is to move on from it and live a better life without any memories of her.

This short story, "Yeouya," gave me a new view of how I should live my life. It taught me to forget problems and, instead of hurting from them, get stronger from them (kaisen!!!). I hope you will enjoy reading this award-winning HIS Writes story as much as I did! Please find it on our HIS Writes page.
