Shadow Man Poetry Emulation

Not every story is about victory—this one is about how hard it is to reach it. Through powerful mountain imagery, this poem explores the long and painful journey toward success, filled with setbacks, struggle, and persistence. There are no shortcuts or easy wins here—only the climb, where every fall and every scar becomes part of growing stronger. More than anything, it shows that success is not a single moment, but a difficult path that demands resilience, endurance, and the strength to keep going.

"We Climb the Mountain" — A HS Creative Writing Emulation by Iurii Shatalov

I’ve bruised my hands
On jagged stone
I’ve chased a peak
I’ve never known
I’ve slipped on ice
I've lost my way
But still I rise
Each breaking day

No golden path
No guiding light
Just frozen winds
In endless night
No cheering crowd
No victory sound
Just beating hearts
Against the ground

We climb the mountain, my friends
And we won’t stop at the bend
We climb in silence
We climb in pain
Through every loss
Through snow and rain
We’re not at the summit yet
But we ascend

Every scar is a foothold
Every fall is a test
Every breath that is shaking
Makes the climber stronger than rest

We climb the mountain, my friends
Through broken ropes that we mend
No easy glory
No instant win
Just fire within
Just fire within
We climb…
We climb…

Reflection

I chose to emulate “We Are the Champions” by Queen. Rather than focusing on victory after success, I wanted to go deeper into the process of becoming successful and how difficult it is to achieve success. My version, “We Climb the Mountain,” uses the metaphor of mountain climbing to represent the long and painful journey toward achievement (top of the mountain).

I recreated the structure of the original song. Like Queen’s version, my lyrics follow a verse–verse–chorus–bridge–final chorus format. The verses begin in the first person (“I’ve bruised my hands…”) to emphasize personal struggle, and then shift to the collective “We” in the chorus. This mirrors the original movement from individual hardship to shared triumph.

I also mimicked the song’s use of repetition. In the original, the chorus repeats “We are the champions” for emotional power and anthem intensity. In my version, I repeat “We climb the mountain” and end the final chorus with a shortened repetition (“We climb… We climb…”) to create a similar dramatic effect.

Another key feature I recreated is theme. While the original presents victory after hardship, I focused on the difficult climb before success. Like Queen’s lyrics, I listed struggles and obstacles before any sense of achievement appears. However, instead of declaring immediate victory, I intentionally ended with ongoing effort rather than completion. This slight shift highlights that success is not instant—it is built through endurance.

Finally, I used imagery to parallel the emotional weight of the original. Instead of directly stating failure or pain, I used concrete images like “jagged stone”, ”frozen winds”, and ”thin air” to symbolize pressure and exhaustion. This helps the struggle feel physical and vivid, much like the emotional intensity in the original.

Through structure, repetition, theme, and imagery, my emulation demonstrates a clear understanding of how Queen built an anthem of perseverance—and reimagines it as a song about the climb before the crown.
