Huskies Excel at 2023 Onion Relay Race
On Saturday October 7th, 2023 Hokkaido International School sent four teams of runners to the starting line at the 2023 Onion Relay Race held in Sapporo’s Moerenuma Park. This event, sponsored by the Japan Onion Farmers Association, was a 21km (half-marathon) distance race that was completed by finishing 1km laps around the park. Runners were encouraged to grab as many onions as they could from different locations during the race, which added to the fun and excitement.
The Husky Pups, our youngest team, was made up of: Moe Ishikawa, Grace Vaeth, Ella Miller, Ailey Sim, Jasper Lofthouse, Kanta Ono, and Kowa Schlosser. The Pyrenees Huskies was a team consisting of: Taiga Amano, Ava Vaeth, Asana Yano, Hanako Clarke, Hanaë Hamazaki, and Joohye Hwang. Both of these teams completed their half-marathon distance successfully and posted some great finishing times.
Two teams from HIS managed to reach the podium in the event! The Alaskan Huskies (Garyu Ide, Noah Shibata, Daniel Shen, Yuna Sim, Nanako Dobashi, and Nina Tadano) won first place in their division, which was an incredible team accomplishment. The Huskies (Mr. Schlosser, Mr. Sim, and Mr. Rankin) finished just behind that team in third place.
Overall, this event was a really great experience for our runners and those from the school community who came to cheer us on. Following our first-ever entry to this event, it is safe to say that we’ll be back with more runners next year! Bring on the onions!
