As we shift into a season of service and fundraising Fridays often come with the added bonus of the beloved (by parents and kids, alike) Friday Camps!

To Begin

What exactly are “Friday Camps” that are held here at HIS? Every once in a while, these “Friday Camps”, like in the name, are held on Fridays and are primarily a “playdate” for the younger kids who sign up, with the assigned high school class taking care of the kids. Since Friday camps require the parent of the child to pay a fee, this event is mainly held for fundraising purposes. Just around a week ago, the 11th-grade class held a Friday camp, and this article will break down the whole event.

Cooking

Friday camps usually start right after school and end around 20:00, which is past dinner time for most of the younger students at HIS. Therefore, we provide the kids with snacks and dinner so that they are fueled during the activities and don’t get too hungry before they have to leave. All the cooking is student led, from planning to the actual cooking, which we feel will help grow bonds between the students. The 11th-grade students prepared some apple slices and bananas for snack time and cooked some gyoza and fried rice for dinner! The kids seemed to have enjoyed it a lot, it was a great success!

Activities

On top of all the cooking, the students hosting the Friday camp would usually prepare some activities to keep the kids occupied and entertained. Other than the movie night, which is normally the concluding event for Friday camp, there would usually be another activity so the kids don’t get bored too easily. This time, since the number of kids the 11th-grade students were working with was quite big, there were two groups of kids, and they alternated between a sports activity and an arts and crafts activity. Dodgeball and red light green light were played in the MPR for the sports group, while the students made some masks and bracelets in the arts and crafts section. All of the kids seemed to be having a great time out there!

To wrap up

The final event of the Friday camp was a movie night that was held down at the map. The movie for that night was Pets, a more recent yet classic movie. Popcorn was served to the kids, and the 11th-grade students were exhausted, but we were very proud of them! Well done!

We hope that there will be more successful Friday camps in the future, and we hope that the students will continue to embrace kaizen and grow relationships!
