High School Girls Basketball

The high school girls' basketball team secured 2nd place in the WJAA tournament last year, and the season is back. We are more than excited to see them achieve new milestones this year!

(Interview)

We have interviewed Coach Alberto on his thoughts on this year’s team.

1. After coaching last year, what has been the most rewarding part of leading the basketball team?

Last year, the most rewarding part of coaching the team was seeing each player grow, both on and off the court. Many students started the season with little confidence in their skills, but by the end, they had gained skills, confidence, and a sense of responsibility. This helped us compete at a higher level in the tournament, and we reached the finals. It was incredibly satisfying to see how they learned to play as a team, support each other, and push past their limits. These changes, especially when students realise their potential, are why I love coaching.

2. This year's group is the largest girls' high school team in HIS for at least the last four years. How do you plan on managing that and ensuring every player gets the necessary practice?

Wow, that’s interesting—I didn’t know that! With a bigger team, I’m focused on setting up practices so each player can be involved and have time to work on their skills and teamwork. We’ve only had a few practices so far, but I plan to use a rotation system so everyone can do the drills and get personal help when needed. I’m also monitoring each player’s progress to ensure no one is left out. The goal is to make each practice as helpful as possible

3. What is your plan to secure each win for our special event this year?

The key to winning each game is preparation and how quickly the girls can adapt as a team. In practice, we’re working on endurance, quick decision-making, and defensive coordination, which I think are essential during the game, especially when the girls are under pressure. Consistency and preparation will be our main tools to succeed in this event.

4. If you could describe this year’s team in one word, what would it be and why?

If I had to describe this year’s team in one word, I would say commitment. I chose this word because each player shows a high level of dedication. This commitment shows in how they attend practices and their attitude at each session, where you can see that each one is willing to give their best. This dedication creates a sense of unity and strength that, I’m sure, will make us a solid and united team this season.

Thanks, Coach Alberto for taking the time to share your thoughts about this year's team!

As our high school girls' basketball team continues to practice every week, we are looking forward to their performance and dedication to the event. Hopefully, they will win as many as possible this year! Regardless of how the girls' team performs during the special event, we value continuous improvement. Let’s Kaizen together with the high school girls' basketball team towards the tournament! Go Huskies!
