Since 2016, the Husky Ski and Board Club has been dominating the ナイター scene. The 2025 season has brought powder and ice, slopes and jumps, newbies and veterans together under one purpose: to enjoy the beautiful place we live. After all, where can you spend three to four hours at a ski resort with your friends for under $15?

Hokkaido International School Ski & Snowboard Club Guide

Welcome to the HIS Ski and Boards Club. This club is a cornerstone of HIS’s commitment to outdoor education, offering students a unique opportunity to connect with nature, develop new skills, and build lasting memories. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or a first-timer, this guide will help you prepare for an exciting season on the slopes.

About the Club

The HIS Ski and Snowboard Club is a beloved tradition at the school (begun in 2016), reflecting its values of outdoor education and experiential learning. Currently (as of 2024-2025) led by Mr. Jared Pangier and Yusei Ponton, the club provides a fun and inclusive environment for students of all skill levels.

When: Every Tuesday and Wednesday during the snow season.

Who: Open to middle and high school students.

Spots Available: Nine spots on Tuesdays, and eight spots on Wednesdays.

Ski Grounds: The club rotates between Bankei, Fu’s, and Moiwa ski areas.

Top Ski Resorts in Sapporo

The club rotates between some of the best ski areas in the region. Here’s a quick overview:

 1. Bankei Ski Area  

Distance: 20 minutes from downtown Sapporo.  

Why Go: It is ideal for beginners and intermediate riders, with fantastic night skiing options. It is very close to central Sapporo. It is not a big ski area, and it is quite narrow in some parts.

 2. Moiwa Ski Resort  

Why Go: Known for its breathtaking views of Sapporo. The closest ski resort to the city. It just opened up to snowboarders, though, so it's mainly for skiers.

Why Go: Longer runs and excellent snow conditions, perfect for day trips. A little far away though — around a 2 hour bus ride from Sapporo station and a 1 hour bus ride from Makomanai station.

Why Go: A small, family-friendly resort with affordable lift tickets for beginners.

 How to Join

  1. Ask an organizer: Mr.Pangier, Yusei Ponton, Reef DePasquale, Garyu Ide
  2. Get Invited to the Google Classroom: Updates, and announcements are posted regularly.  
  3. Sign Up Early: Spots are limited, so secure your place immediately. A sign-up sheet will be posted in front of Mr.Pangier’s room every Monday.
  4. Prepare Your Gear: Whether renting or buying, ensure you have the right equipment for a safe and enjoyable experience.  

The HIS Ski and Snowboard Club is more than just a weekly activity—it’s a chance to embrace the beauty of Hokkaido’s winter, challenge yourself, create unforgettable memories and Kaizen! (改善 = Continuous improvement).
