On the 8th of December, finally, the long-awaited Neyuki had fallen all over Hokkaido. Neyuki is the name of the snow that sticks and stays for the entire winter season. Neyuki represents the shift into winter in Hokkaido, known for its beautiful snowy season.

With the winter season now setting in, we have the chance to watch the beautiful long long-awaited Neyuki falling all over Hokkaido. This snow covers roads, fields and scenery, transforming the landscape into a calm and serene blanket of white. Unlike the fleeting, thin snow showers of the early season, this snow is much fluffier and more significant.

 

Japan, mainly its Northern Region (Hokkaido), experiences heavy snow due to the Siberian High-Pressure System and the Sea of Japan. The frigid air mass from the Siberian High moves eastward across the Sea of Japan. Together with the Siberian High, frigid air, and the Sea of Japan, these create Japan's famous Neyuki.

 

In addition to the recent snowstorms, the amount of powder at ski resorts is ideal for skiing and snowboarding. While the snow up high in the mountainous resorts, such as Kokusai, is amazing, you do not need to go that far to experience skiing on great snow. The ski and board club, every Tuesday and Wednesday, gives you a chance to ski at night at 3 different resorts. Moiwa, Bankei, and Fu’s let you experience night skiing right after school, hang out with friends, and develop your skills.

As Neyuki continues to fall and settle across Hokkaido, it transforms urban city life, reshapes familiar landscapes, and creates a peaceful atmosphere that can only be experienced during this time of year.
