As of November 2024, there are 228 students attending Hokkaido International School, which might seem small compared to other schools, but for our tight-knit community, that is a record-setting number. That means there are a lot of new faces at HIS. One of them is Kyle Curtis, (a new dorm student).

Kyle is half Japanese and half Canadian, born in Tokyo. Coming from Tokyo. This year is Kyle’s first time attending an international school. He is in 8th grade and enjoys playing bass, animating stop motion, and listening to The Red Hot Chili Peppers. He has recently moved into the school's dorm, so I decided to ask him a few questions about his experience here:

1. Why did you join Hokkaido International School?

“I joined because I was getting a bit lonely since the move to Hokkaido. I wanted to be in a crowd more; I pretty much live for talking to people; I love it.”

2. What was your first impression of Hokkaido International School?

“Coming from a Japanese public school, I first thought he was pretty small, but I like that because there are not too many people to keep track of. And there’s pretty much no bullying. And most of the teachers are pretty cool.”

3. Why did you join the HIS Dormitory?

“I live pretty far from school. It’s a small place called Kitahiroshima, about an hour and a half away by train. AND there was a 20 min walk from my house to the station. I was getting up at 5 in the morning! I had little to no free time, and couldn’t get work done. So now I’m in the dorm where it’s all fine now.”

4. What was your first impression of the HIS dorm?

“I first met everyone at my first dinner here. It was also my first time talking to many high schoolers. Most of the students here are very chill and funny. It already feels like home.”

5. What do you think of the students of HIS?

“The people in HIS all seem very cool but I think it’s a bit strange culturally because of all the different people. It’s confusing and hard to fit in sometimes”

6. How long do you plan to stay in HIS?

“I hope to graduate if I can make it that far. My lack of math knowledge is the only thing that’s really bothering me.”

7. How long are you staying in the dorm?

“At the moment, I’m only staying here for the winter months. But plans change”

Thank you, Kyle, for taking the time to share your opinions and experiences with us and for being a part of our tight-knit community. It seems like Kyle is enjoying HIS and wants to stay here with his friends. Let's hope he enjoys the rest of his time as a Husky!
