Introduction

Hokkaido International School (HIS) is an international boarding school that not only places emphasis on academics but is also committed to valuing its community. Supported by the three pillars of arts, service, and outdoors, HIS huskies form a close-knit community where every member is treated with care and respect. Reflecting the school’s value of community, among the various after-school activities, the Table Tennis Club was introduced in the first quarter of the 2024-25 academic year.

Club's Goals

The Table Tennis Club at Hokkaido International School for the 2024-25 academic year is co-led by students Lauri Porthan (11) and Khant HtooNaing (12), under the supervision of MP1 teacher Mr. Eugene Sim. The club was founded with a goal that embodies this school year’s theme of constant self-improvement, Kaizen. Lauri and Khant established the club with the belief that members would not only progress and refine their table tennis skills but also enjoy the camaraderie and fun that comes with the games.

Club's Activities

Every Friday at 3:40 pm, club members gather in the Multipurpose Room (MPR) where the Table Tennis Club takes place. To prevent injuries while playing, the club begins with group stretches led by Lauri. Each member then pairs up with another with similar skill levels and begins playing at one of the three tables. Each pair would play for about 10-15 minutes before switching with a pair that hasn’t played. Throughout the games, Lauri and Khant oversee the members and coach when needed. At 4:30 pm, the club wraps up as members head off home to enjoy their long-awaited weekend.

Words From Some Club Members

"I expected a lot of people would play ping pong and we would have a good time. I couldn’t even do a proper serve, but now I can really play the game.”—Kowa Schlosser

"I want to share the experience of playing ping pong and getting good at it with other people; plus, it’s fun.”— Lauri Porthan
