MS Outdoor Education- Trip to Nishioka Park

by Melody Lin

Introduction

On November 22, 2024, the Middle School Outdoor Education class went to Nishioka Park to observe nature and wildlife. After lunch at school, we gathered together and took the bus to Nishioka Park. This was the MS outdoor education class's first trip there, and we were excited. It is about a 15-20 minute drive from HIS, and during that time, students had a chance to chat on the bus. Once we arrived, our teacher Ms. Tricia told us what we should be aware of and the important things we should know. Because it is almost winter, the bears are having their last feeding before hibernation, so the teachers brought an HIS bear bell just in case.

We could still see the snow!

Walk around the park

When we started walking around the park, we first saw a big pond in the middle. The water was clean; you could see some ducks swimming around, and also some wildlife. We observed seasons and changes in different parts of the park. We could still see some of the second Sapporo snow on the ground; it was a little cold but the sun was bright and felt good. Through the season changing, we could see a few straggling leaves turning orange and brown, but most had already fallen. And then, we all took time to really feel our surroundings. The teacher asked us to not make a sound. We could hear the water moving in a small river; it was so comfortable and happy. We walked one lap first, experiencing the outdoors with our senses. With time left, we continued on for another half-lap before we had to return to the bus. Back on the bus, we chatted, all energized by the fresh air and our sensory joy outdoors.

Everyone is excited for the next trip to the park. HIS Huskies love the outdoors. For us, outdoor learning is so important. Through the outdoors, we can see many things at very close distances; we can touch them, feel them. So happy that we'll be back — but perhaps next time with even more snow!
