Introduction to Publication

Article By Melody Lin; Photos By Valerie Lin

In publications, we do experiential learning, create posts/reels to post on Instagram, and design yearbooks. We also make reports to post on HIS’s websites! Students will participate in the event, take pictures, and design a post that clearly shows what the event is, making it as appealing as possible. Now, what is the thing that makes people improve? The answer is probably the positive struggle.

In publications, we continued the positive struggles; every time we made a project, we kept improving it and reflected on the part that needed improvement. Every class, we start with 10 minutes of personal reflection, the time in which we need to find good models and write down how we think they are good and how we can use those models to guide our next project.

After that, it’s work time—the time when we create a project and design the post. Everyone creates with different styles and patterns. One type of post or reel that I usually create is about the outdoors! At Hokkaido International School, we value the outdoors! Everyone has different opinions, so we each have our own styles and preferences.

Style

With people's style, you will be able to know who made it without seeing the name of the creator.

So, right now, why don’t we interview some middle school publication student about their style?!

First, let’s interview one of the editors, Zion.

"I usually post videos of my own planning, in which I record various aspects of HIS—its outdoors, structure, and the daily lives of students. I also design some posters involving the school’s values, including Kaizen and Seishun, with some of my drawings in them."

Next, let’s ask one of our photographers, Kyle.

“My main thing is photography, so the style or vibe I usually go for in my pictures is as natural and in-the-moment as possible to give people the best idea of what it was like to be there or to best relive a memory. Sometimes, good enough pictures can have a way of reigniting even how you felt in a moment. That’s what I call success. Looking through my work, the photos that work best usually don’t have people posing or looking at the camera because that’s not how we remember things. It’s not very realistic. I think the best pictures of people are of when they don’t know it’s being taken—when they’re being themselves and not thinking too much of how they look. So, for the most part, that’s how I try to take my photos. But don’t worry, I always make sure to ask before the picture goes anywhere. That’s important.”

Now, you know about 2 people's styles! So why don't you go on HIS's Instagram, explore some of the posts, and try to figure out who the creator is?

And after exploring our Instagram, why don't you go and find your style?
