A proud moment for our school and community when our very own Daniel Shen was selected to represent Japan in Canoe Polo at the Senior National Team Level. Daniel, nicknamed 北壁 (North Wall), served as the vice-captain for the U21 Men's team at the Asian Championships last year. This achievement represents years of dedication, discipline, and hard work and stands as an inspiration for athletes of HIS.

Canoe Polo is a sport that combines elements of kayaking, teamwork, ball control, and strategy. Athletes maneuver in kayaks while passing and shooting a ball into elevated goals; the sport requires strong backs, stamina, and technical skill. Daniel is the youngest player ever in the nation's history to play at this level of polo, adding to his already impressive resume.

Q&A with Daniel

What inspired you to take up canoe polo?

Back when I was a jit, just hanging on the strip. I saw people playing canoe polo at a kayak club in Shanghai, and it was like love at first sight. I was eventually invited to play a few games, and I decided that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

How do you plan on facing the pressure of playing at the international level?

The team treats me quite well and encourages me constantly. I'm quite grateful that they treat me like a younger brother. I learnt a lot from them. I’m quite confident in my abilities, and I want that confidence to be evident in my hard work.

Plans after the championships?

I plan to elevate my skills even more. In the future, I hope to play professional Canoe Polo in the German Bundesliga for WSF Liblar, which means I have to remain consistent and trust in my craft. I aim to be known as the best goalie to ever touch the sport.

What has been the most rewarding experience?

The connections you make at international tournaments are the most rewarding parts. Everyone feels like family, and I’ve met some really amazing people throughout the years who have really helped in my growth as not just an athlete but also as a person.
