The Fleeting Sakura Season

In Japan, the arrival of Sakura signals more than the start of Spring; it marks a time of new beginnings, transition, and renewal. The blossoms mark the end of a school year and the start of another, tying them to the culture of graduation. Sakura symbolises “物の哀れ” (mono no aware), the bittersweet beauty of fleeting moments, reflecting how it may be the end of a chapter for some, but the start for others. The trees embody resilience and a fresh start to the year, turning the page from winter’s bare white to vivid pink. Even though HIS’s school year does not conform to the traditional Japanese school year, being immersed in the culture has brought significant meaning for our students.

The timing for Sakura in Hokkaido is unique, as the blossoms usually bloom later in the year, often in late April and early May. Being able to experience the transition from barren, snowy landscape to the vibrant flowers of Spring is an experience exclusive to Hokkaido.

Goryoukaku Park in Hakodate is one of the most iconic viewing spots in Hokkaido, known for the Sakura planted around its star-shaped fort. From the top of Goryoukaku tower, visitors can admire the breathtaking view of the park. The sheer scale of Goryoukaku accentuates the beauty of the Sakura, allowing viewers to bask in the calming atmosphere of this work of nature.

As for Sapporo, places such as Hokkaido Jingu Shrine are great for witnessing breathtaking sakura fields and Japanese culture. The atmosphere of being lost in the woods, combined with the vibrant flowers that symbolize the true meaning of spring in Japan: experiencing traditional Japanese streets while surrounded by nature. Tourists and locals alike gather to commemorate their experiences at one of Japan's most beautiful and famous shrines.

The Sakura season stands at the heart of Japanese culture; to witness this return every spring is a blessing. Every year, the blossoming trees invite us out, beneath their drifting petals, to experience their beauty once again. Their brief and delicate beauty draws us in, where their petals drift like passing moments we are lucky to witness.
