Welcoming Fall Through Play

On September 22nd, EY students joined MP2 and Niseko students to celebrate the start of Fall.  We joined many children around the world to celebrate the International Fairy Tea Party Day.  Through a series of collaborative activities, the children welcome Fall in a magical and fun way.

Welcoming Fall Through Play

International Fairy Tea Party Day is celebrated on a day when all the children around the world share the fact that we have 12 hours of daylight - the equinox! We might not all share the same resources, the same seasons, the same cultures or religions, but we can share the fact that we all have 12 hours of daylight to celebrate children's right to PLAY. Play outdoors and explore nature. Fairies give you the chance to see the little things up close. The equinox - a day where the number of sunlight hours is the same no matter where you are in the world, and suddenly we are united by light, play, and our imaginations!

On September 22nd, the EY children joined MP2 and Niseko students to celebrate this special day.
We started by exploring our garden and using herbs and flowers to make "magic potions." The children also made little fairy houses by gluing natural materials like sticks and pinecones. These tiny homes are now on a shelf in our classroom, decorated with things we think the fairies will love! We hope they might decide to visit and stay with us.
For snack time, we set places at the table for the fairies and served mint tea made with mint from our garden.

Everyone tried the tea—some loved it, others didn't—but the most important thing was trying something new together.
Before lunch, we talked with our Niseko friends on Zoom to show them our fairy creations. Then, we joined the MP2 students outside to build even more fairy houses!

It was a very fun and busy day for all the children. This celebration was also a great chance for teachers to start conversations about the changing season, like how the weather is getting cooler and that Fall is officially here.
