Winter Sunlight

In January, the morning sunlight is just at the right angle to hit our classroom whiteboard when the children come in at 8:15 am.  This natural phenomenon often sparks curiosity in the children because shadows are easy to see.  This week, the children noticed that when they held the translucent magnetic tiles in the sunlight, they reflected on the whiteboard.  They also noticed that the light moved as time passed.  This natural curiosity and interest is a great point of entry for an inquiry into the science of shadows and light.  Because we co-create learning opportunities based on the students’ interests, teachers will capitalize on this natural curiosity by setting up provocations and invitations with new materials to help them investigate their theories.

Their current theories about why the light moves across our whiteboard are:

  • - The sun is moving
  • - The wind blows the light
  • - A car is moving the light
  • - The clouds are pushing the sun
  • - The temperature is moving the sun

We are excited to see how their theories evolve over the next few weeks as we investigate this phenomenon together.
